Spherical Aberration in Mirrors

The surface of a parabolic mirror is shaped so that light approaching parallel to the axis of the mirror is brought to a focus at a point. For a spherical mirror this is not the case. Light approaching the mirror along the principal axis is reflect through the focal point, but light approaching the mirror further from the principal axis does not, and the image formed is blurred.

This phenomenon is called spherical aberration.
